Galaxy of Angels – column on Los Angeles Galaxy (LA Galaxy) & the LA soccer scene.

Frisco, Texas – The Los Angeles Galaxy has had their hands full the last month or so with Landon Donovan being gone on Gold Cup duty and Robbie Keane out with a hip flexor.

Sunday night’s game against FC Dallas was their first MLS game featuring their full lineup. Though Robbie Rogers played in the International Champions Cup, he was left out of the matchday 18 (coach’s decision).

FC Dallas scored its 1st goal in 5 games in the 15th minute on a header by Matt Hedges. The goal was reminiscent of the one scored late in the game last April. The Galaxy are still having problems on defending set pieces and goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini was not confident enough to leave his line.

The Galaxy threw most of their players forward for part of the 1st half getting a few good looks on goal.

LA’s midfield looked better Sunday night than its last few games, but it could not connect for a goal until the end of the 1st half when Donovan headed in a beautiful pass by Keane. That was also Donovan’s 1st goal for the Galaxy since June 8 against Real Salt Lake.

Gyasi Zardes has had the most shots on goal for LA this year and he is still having trouble finishing. He had a big chance with a point blank shot that was blocked by Chris Seitz. It was quite a treat watching him go against 18-year-old Kellyn Acosta, who got his first MLS start.

Landon Donovan ended the game with a hat trick for Los Angeles and has scored more goals against FC Dallas than any other team in MLS.

Dallas got help from the assistant referee as he made 2 bad mistakes leading to a pair of goals by Blas Perez. The 1st was when he was offsides when he scored in the 48th minute. LA defended well but was unlucky even though the assistant referee was staring directly at the backline.

The next mistake came when George John was obstructing Cudicini in an offside position for Perez’s strike in 86th minute.

With this draw, FC Dallas has been winless in their last 10 games.

NEXT UP: August 17 – LA Galaxy vs. Real Salt Lake, Stub Hub Center, Carson, CA. 10:30 EST, TWCSN and MLS Live.
