Americans Overseas – column on USA soccer players playing abroad for clubs outside of North America

A total of 4 Americans played this past weekend in the Premier League. Jozy Altidore played 90 minutes for Sunderland in a 3-1 home loss to Arsenal.

Altidore nearly came away with his 1st Premier League goal in the 69th minute when he tussled with Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna, came away with the ball and slotted the ball past goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny. However, referee Martin Atkinson called the play back for a foul against Sagna. Therefore, Altidore did not get his goal on the day.

Elsewhere, Geoff Cameron put in a solid 90 minute shift at rightback for Stoke against Manchester City. Stoke held off City for the 0-0 draw.

Goalkeeper Tim Howard also had an impressive 90 minutes against a Premier League heavyweight. Howard was vital in securing a 1-0 win for Everton against Chelsea. Brad Guzan and Aston Villa were not quite as fortunate, however. Guzan played 90 minutes but Villa went on to lose 2-1 to Newcastle.

In the Championship, 4 Americans played 90 minutes and 3 of them picked up an assist. Eric Lichaj played 90 minutes against Middlesbrough as Nottingham Forest drew the game at 2-2 in the 79th minute. Lichaj happened to assist on the tying goal.

Tim Ream and Danny Williams also picked up assists in their 90 minutes. Ream continued his impressive streak in the midfield for Bolton and Williams seems to be solidifying himself in the Reading midfield. Bolton sit dead last after tying Derby 2-2 and Reading defeated Leeds 1-0.

Also worthy of mentioning, Jonathan Spector played 90 minutes in the midfield for Birmingham City. However, Birmingham lost 3-0 to Burnley.

John Anthony Brooks had another 90 minute shift for Hertha Berlin. Brooks and Hertha, however, were unfortunate this week to come away with a 1-0 loss at home to Stuttgart.

Jermaine Jones only played 21 minutes for Schalke after coming off the bench in a 1-0 win against Mainz.

Timothy Chandler played 90 minutes for Nurnberg and came away with an assist in a 1-1 draw against Braunschweig.

Fabian Johnson also played 90 minutes. Hoffenheim disposed of Borussia Monchengladbach with a 2-1 win.

In Bundesliga II action, Andrew Wooten and Kaiserslautern lost to Sandhausen 1-0 this past week. Wooten was on loan with Sandhausen last season. Wooten entered the game and played 28 minutes but couldn’t find a way to shame his old club.

Elsewhere, Alfredo Morales and Ingolstadt sit in last place after losing to Union Berlin 1-0. Morales played 90 minutes. In 1860 Munich's most recent match, Bobby Wood dressed but did not play. 1860 drew Aalen 0-0.

Aron Johannsson currently has 4 goals in the Eridivisie and scored 1 of those goals in Alkmaar’s last fixture against Go Ahead Eagles. Johannsson played 81 minutes and scored a penalty kick in the 3-0 AZ win.

Rosenborg’s lead in the Tippeligaen grew smaller this past week as they lost to Tromse 1-0. Mix Diskerud played 90 minutes for Rosenborg.

Steve Clark played 90 minutes as well as Honefoss lost to IK Start 1-0.

Alejandro Bedoya played in a 1-0 win for Nantes against Sochaux this past week. Bedoya exited the match after 75 minutes. Nantes sits in 9th place in the Ligue 1 table.

Conor O’Brien played 90 minutes for Odense in a 2-1 loss to Brondby. Otherwise, Babajide Ogunbiyi is experiencing an extremely successful stint at centerback for Viborg. In Viborg’s most recent fixture against AGF, Ogunbiyi not only played 90 minutes and secured a clean sheet but also scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win.

Another player on an impressive streak of form is Sacha Kljestan. Kljestan is currently tied for 3rd in goal-scoring in the Jupiler League after scoring in a 5-0 thrashing of Mechelen. Anderlecht are currently in 4th place.

Rapid Wien took down Wacker Innsbruck 4-0. Terrence Boyd scored a goal in the 83 minutes that he played.

Only 1 American started for Tijuana as they drew Guadalajara 2-2 this past week. That American was Edgar Castillo. Paul Arriola played the final 9 minutes and Greg Garza played the final 11 minutes. Joe Corona dressed but did not play.

Elsewhere in Mexico, Alonso Hernandez played 90 minutes for Monterrey in a 1-0 win against DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco’s Puebla. However, Orozco and Beasley did not dress. Someone who did dress was 21-year-old American Justin Perez. Perez will be looking to make his Mexican league debut for Monterrey soon after dressing without playing twice.

Elsewhere, Jose Torres did not dress for Tigres midweek against Santos Laguna but Jonathan Bornstein did. Bornstein did not see any time on the field, however. Tigres went on to defeat Santos 3-0.
