Americans Overseas – column on USA soccer players playing abroad for clubs outside of North America

Jozy Altidore and Sunderland continue to sit in last place in the Premier League after falling to Liverpool 3-1 in their last fixture. Altidore played the entirety of the 90 minutes.

Elsewhere, Norwich defeated Stoke 1-0 as Geoff Cameron played 90 minutes. Brek Shea and Maurice Edu were once again nowhere to be found in the Stoke squad. Tim Howard and Everton are experiencing a good run of form. Everton is currently in 4th place after disposing of Newcastle 3-2. With the result, they are also the last unbeaten team in the Premier League so far this season. Howard not only played 90 minutes but also pulled off an assist. His long ball led to a Romelu Lukaku goal. That would prove to be Lukaku’s 2nd of the night.

Oddly enough, Howard wasn’t the only American goalkeeper to assist on a goal overseas this week. Brad Guzan also had an assist in Aston Villa’s 3-2 win over Manchester City. His punt saw Andreas Weimann get on the scoresheet in the 75th minute and proved to be the winning goal in Guzan’s 90 minute display.

In the Championship, Tim Ream, Eric Lichaj, Jonathan Spector were the only Americans to play 90 minutes in the midweek fixtures. Birmingham defeated Millwall 4-0. Bolton drew for the fifth time this season with a 0-0 result against Blackpool. As for Nottingham Forest, they drew to Charlton 1-1. 1 American made the bench for their respective Championship club but he did not play. That is 18-year-old Duane Holmes, who made his Championship debut in the match before that against Blackpool.

Jermaine Jones played 86 minutes from the start against Fabian Johnson and Hoffenheim this past week. Johnson played 70 minutes as the 2 sides dueled it out to a 3-3 draw.

Timothy Chandler and Nurnberg also drew their respective opponent, Werder Bremen, 3-3. Chandler played the entirety of the match and came away with a yellow card.

In the Bundesliga II, Alfredo Morales was the only American to play a part in the league’s most recent round of fixtures. Morales came off the bench in the 38th minute of Ingolstadt’s 2-1 loss to St Pauli.

Aron Johannsson has 5 goals so far in this Eridivisie campaign which makes him the 5th highest goal scorer in the league at the moment. In AZ Alkmaar’s most recent match against PSV Eindhoven, Johannsson notched another goal. AZ went on to win 2-1. Subsequently, AZ Alkmaar announced that it had parted ways with manager, Gertjan Verbeek after spending roughly 3 years with the club. The club cited that “chemistry” was a leading factor in making the surprising decision.

Steve Clark and Honefoss couldn’t seem to prevail with a win in their last fixture. Honefoss drew Viking 2-2. Clark played another 90 minutes and also picked up a yellow card in the 59th minute. Elsewhere, Ethan Horvath and Ben Spencer made the bench for Molde in their 1-1 tie against Haugesund but neither entered the match.

Alejandro Bedoya did not start for Nantes against Rennes this past week however he did enter the match in the 24th minute. Nantes eventually won the match 3-1 and they sit in sixth place in the league currently.

Babajide Ogunbiyi put together another solid performance for Viborg as they defeated Vestsjaelland 2-0 in their last league match. Ogunbiyi went 90 minutes. Viborg is now in 3rd place in the Danish Superliga.

Sacha Kljestan is soldiering on with his strong season thus far with Anderlecht. Anderlecht took down Lierse 2-0 recently. Anderlecht aren’t experiencing their best campaign, however, as they sit in fourth place for the time being.

Rapid Wien are another powerhouse sitting in fourth place in their respective league. Rapid just recently lost to RZ Pellets 4-2. Terrence Boyd played 90 minutes but did not have anything to show for it on the stats sheet.

3 out of 5 Americans at Tijuana played in their last fixture against Club America. Greg Garza was the lone American to not play. He did make the bench. Joe Corona played 44 minutes off the bench while Paul Arriola played 28 minutes coming from the bench. Herculez Gomez and Edgar Castillo got the start. Gomez was subbed out in the 72nd minute while Castillo was the only American to play 90 minutes.

Before their match against Club America, Tijuana faced off against Damarcus Beasley, Michael Orozco, and Puebla. Beasley and Orozco both played 90 minutes, Orozco picked up a yellow card, and Puebla went on to win 2-0. All 5 Americans for Tijuana were once again involved. Garza did not play but did make the bench. Castillo played 90 minutes while Gomez and Arriola entered the match as substitutes. Arriola entered for Joe Corona in the 46th minute and Gomez came on in the 59th minute.

Elsewhere, Jose Torres and Jonathan Bornstein took on Monterrey with Tigres. Torres played 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw while Bornstein remained on the bench for the duration.
