Americans Overseas – column on USA soccer players playing abroad for clubs outside of North America

England

Jozy Altidore and Sunderland are now on a six-game losing streak in the league heading into this weekend’s match against Newcastle. Swansea disposed of Sunderland 4-0 this past weekend in Gus Poyet’s first game as manager of the club. Altidore didn’t have a chance to make much of an impact on the game as he only made an eight minute cameo as a substitute. It remains to be seen why Altidore only played eight minutes, but having played and traveled with the US National Team days before it seems likely that he was just being rested.

Stoke mainstay, Geoff Cameron, did not feature for Stoke against West Brom on Saturday. The Massachusetts native was out with a calf injury. The match ended in a 0-0 result.

Tim Howard and Everton came away with a 2-1 win against Hull City on Saturday. Howard played the entirety of the fixture. Brad Guzan and Aston Villa weren’t as fortunate however.

Guzan and Villa fell to Tottenham 2-0 as Guzan also played 90 minutes.

In the Championship, a certain Duane Holmes has been impressing for Huddersfield. The 18-year-old entered this weekend’s fixture in the 61st minute. Holmes couldn’t help Huddersfield prevail, however, as they fell to Leicester 2-1.

Elsewhere, Eric Lichaj did not feature for Nottingham Forest. This is said to be because of yellow card accumulation. Forest drew Bournemouth 1-1.

Tim Ream once again saw 90 minutes for Bolton and performed admirably in a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday. Bolton are currently on a four-game unbeaten streak, which means they are also now out of the relegation zone. Bolton currently sit one point above Barnsley and the relegation zone.

Germany

Timothy Chandler and Nurnberg drew Eintracht Frankfurt 1-1 as Chandler played 90 minutes. Nurnberg sit third from bottom in the relegation playoff at the moment and have hired a manager to pull them out of relegation talk. That manager is former AZ Alkmaar manager, Gertjan Verbeek. The Dutch manager has previously coached Americans such as Jozy Altidore, Aron Johannsson and Michael Bradley.

In the Bundesliga II, Bobby Wood had a stoppage time cameo against FC Cologne for 1860 Munich. Munich drew Cologne 0-0. Alfredo Morales and Ingolstadt sit in last place in the Bundesliga II. Ingolstadt lost once again, this time to Fortuna Dusseldorf 2-1. Morales entered the match in the 62nd minute.

Italy

Michael Bradley seems to have successfully returned from injury, but will now have to work his way back in to a very successful Roma side. Roma took down Napoli 2-0 this past Friday continuing form that currently has them five points clear in first place. Bradley did not play despite dressing.

Netherlands

Johannsson had a big weekend, yet again. In AZ Alkmaar’s most recent fixture against Cambuur, Johannsson picked up two goals and an assist, which helped see AZ to a 3-1 victory. Johannsson is now the third-highest scorer in the Eridivisie with seven goals.

Norway

With three fixtures left in Honefoss’ Tippeligaen campaign, there is hope for Honefoss to stay in the Tippeligaen, but it may be difficult. The club is dead last, three points from the relegation playoff, and five points from safety after losing to Molde 1-0. Steve Clark once again went 90 minutes. He will be looked upon heavily to help the club remain in Norway’s top division. As for Molde, Ethan Horvath made the bench but did not play.

Rosenborg and Mikkel Diskerud also find themselves in a battle in the final stretch of this season. The club is currently even in points with Stromsgodset at the top of the table. Stromsgodset has the edge on goal differential. That edge is quite big, however, as Stromsgodset has a 35 goal differential while Rosenborg has plus-22. Both sides have three fixtures left. Due to the difference in goals, Rosenborg will not only have to take care of business themselves but will hope that Stromsgodset doesn’t. Rosenborg did take care of business in their last fixture as they defeated IK Start 1-0. Diskerud entered the match as a sub in the 61st minute.

France

Alejandro Bedoya grabbed his first goal of the season for Nantes against Ajaccio. The goal was also the deciding factor as the match ended 1-0. Bedoya did not start. He entered in the 87th minute for fourth place Nantes.

Denmark

Conor O’Brien played 90 minutes against his old club, Sondersjyke, on Monday. Odense came out of the fixture with a 5-1 victory. Odense are sitting pretty in fourth place. Right behind them in fifth place is Viborg and Babajide Ogunbiyi. Viborg have slipped from third place to fifth in the league after losing 3-1 to second place Aalborg and drawing 0-0 to Brondby this last Sunday. Ogunbiyi put together another strong 90 minute showing at centerback against Brondby.

Belgium

Sacha Kljestan dressed but did not play for Anderlecht in their most recent fixture against Mons. Anderlecht prevailed 2-0 without one of its leading scorers however.

Austria

Terrence Boyd did not start for Rapid Wien in their game against Sturm Graz, but he scored a penalty kick that caused the game to end in a 2-2 draw. Boyd came into the match in the 46th minute.

Mexico

Injury kept Damarcus Beasley out of Puebla’s last fixture against Atlas. Michael Orozco played 90 minutes in the 2-0 win which keeps Puebla in the playoff discussion. Puebla currently sit right outside of the playoff picture in ninth place.

Tijuana and the plethora of Americans that play for the club drew Toluca 0-0. Edgar Castillo put together another solid 90 minutes. Otherwise, Paul Arriola started and played 68 minutes. Herculez Gomez subbed in for him. Greg Garza played the final nine minutes of regulation while Joe Corona dressed but did not play.
