Americans Overseas – column on USA soccer players playing abroad for clubs outside of North America

England

Jozy Altidore arguably experienced his best Premier League game for Sunderland in the last round of this year’s Premier League campaign. The imposing forward not only had a say in the first goal when he won the initial corner, but also assisted on the second goal in a 2-1 Sunderland win. This win against Newcastle was Sunderland’s first of the season. With those vital three points, Sunderland is now off of the bottom of the table and in 19th place. Altidore played the entirety of the match Two places above Sunderland, in 17th place, is Stoke City, which narrowly lost to Manchester United 3-2. Geoff Cameron played 90 minutes.

Tim Howard and Brad Guzan faced off against each other on Saturday. Both played 90 minutes in a 2-0 Everton win. Guzan and Aston Villa had a chance to go 1-0 up early but Howard terrifically denied a Christian Benteke penalty kick. Howard went on to preserve the clean sheet for Everton but also picked up a yellow card in his performance. Everton are currently in sixth place as Aston Villa sit in 14th.

In the Championship, Oguchi Onyewu dressed for Queens Park Rangers for the first time since signing for the club earlier in the week. QPR went up against first place Burnley and lost 2-0. Onyewu did not make a substitute appearance. QPR are now in third place.

Duane Holmes also experienced a first in Huddersfield’s match against Leeds. Holmes made his first senior start for Huddersfield in a 3-2 win. Holmes was subbed off at halftime.

Elsewhere, Eric Lichaj played 90 minutes for Nottingham Forest in a 3-1 loss to Yeovil Town. Tim Ream also played 90 minutes. Bolton drew Ipswich 1-1.

Germany

This past week in the Bundesliga saw Hertha Berlin fall 3-2 to Bayern Munich. John Anthony Brooks did dress but did not play.

Jermaine Jones also did not happen to start for his respective club. Jones subbed on in the 76th minute of Schalke’s match against Borussia Dortmund. Schalke fell 3-1 to Dortmund as Jones picked up a yellow in the match.

Elsewhere, Michael Parkhurst dressed for Augsburg. Parkhurst did not play, though, as Augsburg lost to Bayer Leverkusen 2-1. As for another fullback in the Bundesliga, Timothy Chandler had a strong 90 minute performance for Nurnberg. Chandler assisted on Nurnberg’s only goal as they tied Stuttgart 1-1. The draw was Nurnberg’s seventh draw of the season and the club have yet to win a match as they sit third from bottom in the relegation zone.

In the Bundesliga II, 1860 Munich lost to Karlsruhe 2-1. Bobby Wood dressed but did not make an appearance off of the bench. Alfredo Morales played 90 minutes for Ingolstadt as they took down Greuther Furth 1-0.

Italy

Michael Bradley is coming off a massive weekend for himself. In the midfielder’s first appearance back since being sidelined with an ankle injury, Bradley scored the game winning goal in Roma’s 1-0 defeat of Udinese. Bradley entered the match as a sub in the 78th minute to deliver the winner four minutes later. The goal was Bradley’s first of the season and second for Roma since joining the side in 2012. The goal, more importantly, preserved Roma’s undefeated record and took them to 9-0 so far this season. Fans must be loving Lex Luthor.

Netherlands

Aron Johannsson and AZ Alkmaar continued their good run of form. AZ is tied for first on points after defeating Zwolle 2-0. With a plus-2 goal differential, AZ is in third place. Johannsson played 74 minutes against Zwolle but did not come away with a goal or assist as he has several times this season.

Norway

Mikkel Diskerud and Rosenborg lost a vital match this past week to Molde. Though Diskerud played 90 minutes, Rosenborg could not get any points away to Molde. None of the Americans employed by Molde dressed for the club. The loss to Molde means that Rosenborg is now also behind Stromsgodset on points. Previously, Rosenborg was only in second place due to goal differential but with a loss and a Stromsgodset win, Rosenborg will now have to hope Stromsgodset drops points in both of their final two matches. Will they drop points? Stromsgodset will travel to 14th place Tromsø this week and then finish their season by facing third place Haugesund at home. One might say it is possible. We will have to see.

Honefoss came out of this week with a draw against Brann. Steve Clark, once again, played 90 minutes. Honefoss are four points from safety, in last place, with two matches left in the Tippeligaen season.

France

Alejandro Bedoya dressed but did not play in a 1-0 Nantes loss to Lille on Friday.

Denmark

Both Odense and Viborg are continuing strong seasons in the Danish Superliga. Babajide Ogunbiyi had yet another stellar performance in a 4-1 win against Vestsjaelland. Odense and Conor O'Brien drew Brondby 0-0. Both O’Brien and Ogunbiyi went 90 for their respective clubs.

Belgium

On Wednesday, Anderlecht faced Oostende and won 3-0. Sacha Kljestan started and played 90 minutes. Kljestan also scored once again. His 73rd minute goal means he now has six goals this season. He is now tied for sixth as the highest scoring player in the Jupiler League this season.

Austria

Terrence Boyd provided the vital goal for Rapid this past week. Boyd got the winner against Austria Wien in the 88th minute. The match ended 1-0. Boyd played 90 minutes and also picked up a yellow card.

Greece

Michael Hoyos made a substitute appearance for OFI Crete in a 5-1 loss to Olympiakos. Hoyos entered the match in the 62nd minute.

Brazil

Freddy Adu dressed for Bahia in their match against Atletico Paranaense but he did not play. The match ended a 1-1 draw.

Mexico

Puebla and Tijuana are fighting to get into the Mexican playoffs. Both sides have been on the outside looking in and still are after a not-so-successful week. Jose Torres, Jonathan Bornstein and the Tigres came closer to eighth place this week, however. Tigres are in ninth and one point from the playoffs after defeating Club America 1-0. Torres played 67 minutes from the start while Bornstein dressed but did not play. Puebla fell to Club America 3-1 in their last fixture. Both Michael Orozco and Damarcus Beasley played 90 minutes. Puebla is in eleventh and four points from the playoff picture.

Tijuana are also four points from the playoffs. Tijuana drew Torres and Tigres 0-0 in their last fixture. Joe Corona, Paul Arriola, and Edgar Castillo all started. Castillo once again played 90 minutes. Corona played 61 minutes and Arriola played 76 minutes. Gomez subbed on for Corona while Greg Garza dressed but did not play.
