Americans Overseas – column on USA soccer players playing abroad for clubs outside of North America

England

Despite Jozy Altidore’s heroics in the Capital One Cup midweek, he did not start against Manchester City for Sunderland on the weekend. However, Sunderland upset Manchester City 1-0. Altidore came on in the 77th minute. The result means Sunderland keep a streak of beating Manchester City once each year for the past four years. The result also means Sunderland is only three points from exiting the relegation zone.

Stoke City came across their fourth draw of the season Sunday after a 3-3 match against Swansea. Geoff Cameron played 90 minutes for Stoke.

Tim Howard and Everton picked up their second 0-0 draw in a row Saturday against Crystal Palace after drawing Tottenham six days earlier. Tim Howard played 90 minutes for Everton.

As for Brad Guzan, Aston Villa took down Cardiff 2-0 as Guzan played 90 minutes.  

In the Championship, Huddersfield and Duane Holmes took on Jonathan Spector’s Birmingham Saturday. Birmingham came out victorious with a 3-1 win. Holmes dressed but did not play. Spector did not dress for Birmingham after being ruled out for up to three months with a thigh injury last month.

Eric Lichaj and Nottingham Forest also faced a Championship side harboring an injured American. Forest defeated Zak Whitbread’s club, Leicester, 2-0 Saturday. Lichaj did not start for Forest but came off the bench to play the final 15 minutes. Whitbread, on the other hand, could still be injured for up to two weeks with a calf strain.

Tim Ream and Bolton continued their fine form over the weekend. Bolton are now on a seven game unbeaten streak after defeating Millwall 3-1 Saturday. Not only did Ream play 90 minutes in the match but he also came away from the match with an assist. Ream found Jermaine Beckford on a finely weaved pass for Bolton’s second goal in the 43rd minute.

Germany

Fabian Johnson and John Anthony Brooks’ respective clubs went at it Saturday as Hertha Berlin took down Hoffenheim 3-2. Fabian Johnson played the entirety of the second half off of the bench for Hoffenheim. Brooks dressed but did not play for Hertha.

Elsewhere, Jermaine Jones played a sturdy 90 minutes for Schalke in a 3-1 win against Werder Bremen. Jones also received a yellow card in the game. As for Timothy Chandler, Nurnberg are now in last place after losing to Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 over the weekend. Chandler played 90 minutes for Nurnberg in the match.   

In the Bundesliga II, 1860 Munich defeated Bielefeld 1-0. Bobby Wood played the final eighteen minutes off of the bench. Alfredo Morales played another 90 minutes for Ingolstadt as they took down Aalen 2-0. Ingolstadt is now on a three-game unbeaten streak and are up to 16th place in the table.

Italy

After coming across their first draw of the year against Torino, Roma went up against Sassuolo at home on Sunday. It was not Roma’s most lucky day. After leading 1-0 for 90 minutes, Sassuolo netted an equalizer in stoppage time that assured Roma’s second draw in a row. After a Marco Borriello injury, Michael Bradley subbed on for Roma in the 33rd minute.  

Netherlands

AZ Alkmaar drew Feyenoord 2-2 Sunday. Aron Johannsson scored both goals for AZ and also received a yellow card in his 57 minutes on the pitch.

Norway

Mikkel Diskerud and Rosenborg failed to win the Tippeligaen in unfortunate fashion Sunday. Rosenborg dismantled Lillestrom 3-0 on the day. Mikkel Diskerud played 90 minutes in Rosenborg’s final match of league play. Stromsgodset won even more emphatically however, defeating Haugesund 4-0. Rosenborg needed a Stromsgodset tie or loss in order to win the league.

France

Nantes continue to surprise the naysayers in Ligue 1. Nantes took apart Bordeaux 3-0 over the weekend while Alejandro Bedoya played 90 minutes at right midfield. Nantes are currently in fourth place in Ligue 1.

Denmark

Both Odense and Viborg are now on two game losing streaks after this weekend. Babajide Ogunbiyi and Viborg fell 3-2 to Midtylland. Ogunbiyi played all 90 minutes. Viborg now sit in sixth place. Odense, however, may be in worse trouble as they slipped to ninth place after their loss. Odense lost 3-1 to Vestsjaelland as Conor O’Brien played the entirety of the match.

Belgium

Anderlecht climbed to fourth place in the Jupiler League after defeating Genk 1-0 over the weekend. Sacha Kljestan played the full 90 minutes for Anderlecht.

Austria

Rapid Wien drew Grodig 2-2 in their most recent league fixture. Terrence Boyd played 74 minutes for Rapid in the match.  

Mexico

We are now officially in the playoffs in Mexico, too. Tijuana, Monterrey, and Puebla all narrowly lost out on making the playoffs. Tigres is one club with an American that made the playoffs however.

Tijuana needed a win against Leon in order to have any chance of making the playoffs. Club Tijuana failed quite miserably however, losing to Leon 5-0. Herculez Gomez and Greg Garza dressed but did not play. Paul Arriola entered the match in the 55th minute though while Edgar Castillo played the entirety of the match. Monterrey narrowly defeated Guadalajara 2-1 in their final league fixture of the Apertura. Alonso Hernandez dressed but did not play.

Tigres finished the Apertura in the final playoff spot, eighth place. Tigres took down Atlas 1-0 in order to do so. Jose Torres entered the match in the 77th minute. Tigres will face Club America in their first playoff series, starting on the 24th, later this month.
