Action Abroad Includes Possible Dempsey EPL Return

Americans Overseas – column on USA soccer players playing abroad for clubs outside of North America


Sunderland picked up their third draw of the season Saturday in a 0-0 match against West Ham. Jozy Altidore started and played 73 minutes. Sunderland stays on the bottom of the Premier League table for the time being.

Stoke City on the other hand have climbed to 13th  after a 3-game unbeaten streak. Geoff Cameron yet again played a sturdy 90 minutes for Stoke City at right back against Hull City on Saturday. This match also ended 0-0.

Tim Howard and Everton took down Fulham 4-1 Saturday, which brings the club a step closer to European football next season as they sit in 5th place. Howard played 90 minutes in the 4-1 thrashing.

As for Fulham, reports point to the possibility of club legend, Clint Dempsey returning on loan this winter. A loan deal for Dempsey could certainly help the club who currently sit in 19th place in the league.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Brad Guzan had a rough go of it on the weekend. Manchester United defeated Aston Villa 3-0 as Guzan played 90 minutes.

In the Championship, Bolton and Tim Ream hit a bump in the road after a 3-0 win against Doncaster last weekend. Bolton lost to Wigan 3-2 this past Sunday. Ream played 90 minutes.

Duane Holmes’ and Danny Williams’ respective clubs faced each other Saturday as Reading took down Huddersfield 1-0. Williams played 90 minutes and received a yellow card for Reading while Holmes came off the bench to play the final 17 minutes.

Elsewhere, Eric Lichaj dressed but did not play for Nottingham Forest as they drew Ipswich 0-0.


Fabian Johnson did not start for Hoffenheim on Saturday as they drew Dortmund 2-2. He did however enter the match in the 71st minute. German-American Jeremy Toljan started and played 90 minutes for Hoffenheim at leftback.  

Elsewhere, Jermaine Jones played the final 32 minutes for Schalke in their 2-0 win against Freiburg Sunday.

Nurnberg and Hannover 96 faced each other Saturday in a match that saw 6 goals. The 2 sides drew 3-3. Timmy Chandler played 90 minutes for Nurnberg while Steve Cherundolo is still seemingly recovering for Hannover. Cherundolo dressed but did not play.

In the Bundesliga II, 1860 Munich lost to St Pauli 2-0. Bobby Wood played the final 24 minutes off of the bench. Alfredo Morales played another 90 minutes for Ingolstadt as they took drew Aue 0-0.


Roma came away with an important point away from home against Milan Monday. Michael Bradley started and played 90 for Roma. Roma led the match 2-1 through Mattia Destro and Kevin Strootman goals until the 77th minute when Sulley Muntari rescued a point for Milan. 


AZ Alkmaar lost 2-0 to Heracles Sunday. Aron Johannsson played 90 minutes in the match. AZ are now in 7th place in the Eredivisie.


Fifth place Nantes fell 2-1 to Toulouse Saturday. Alejandro Bedoya started and played 75 minutes for Nantes.


Viborg lost 5-0 to Aalborg Monday and are now in 9th place in the Danish Superliga. Babajide Ogunbiyi continues to start for the Danish underdogs, however. Ogunbiyi played 90 minutes in the one-sided affair against Aalborg. Viborg have not picked up a win in five matches. Odense and Conor O’Brien are not struggling as bad but are sitting in seventh place and also picked up a loss during the weekend, a 2-0 loss to Nordsjaelland. Conor O’Brien started and played 69 minutes in the loss. 


Rapid Wien drew Wiener Neustadt 0-0 Sunday. Terrence Boyd did not start but entered in the 73rd minute.
