Americans Overseas – column on USA soccer players playing abroad for clubs outside of North America

Headlining this week in Americans overseas is Clint Dempsey’s loan move to former club, Fulham, from current club, Seattle Sounders. Dempsey was not included in Fulham’s squad to play West Ham as some speculated there were still pieces to the loan deal that still had to be resolved. However, Dempsey should be expected to play some sort of role in Fulham’s match later this week against Norwich.

Sunderland continued their woes at the bottom of the league as they lost 1-0 to Aston Villa on New Year’s Day. Jozy Altidore did not start for Sunderland but entered the match in the 67th minute. Brad Guzan played all 90 minutes for Villa as he came away with the clean sheet.

After losing 3-0 to Tottenham in which Geoff Cameron played 90 minutes at centerback, Cameron transitioned back to his usual rightback role for Stoke’s match against Tim Howard and Everton. Both outings could be considered successes in terms of Cameron’s individual play. However, Stoke drew Everton 1-1. Howard played 90 minutes for Everton as Cameron played 90 for Stoke and received a yellow card.

Brek Shea brings about another storyline out of Stoke as he made a loan move to Championship side Barnsley. The loan deal is reportedly a 28-day loan. Shea already featured for Barnsley so it seems to be an appropriate move in terms of getting himself playing time. Shea started his first match for Barnsley against Birmingham City in which the sides drew 1-1. Shea played 75 minutes before being replaced.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Bolton and Tim Ream are coming off a 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough. Tim Ream was forced to play leftback for the second match in a row after Kevin McNaughton’s loan deal with Bolton expired.

Danny Williams and Eric Lichaj went head to head on New Year’s Day. The clash ended in a 1-1 draw. Both Williams and Lichaj played 90 minutes. Danny Williams came away with a yellow card.

Duane Holmes and Huddersfield lost 3-2 to second place Burnley. Holmes did not start but entered the proceedings in the 52nd minute. Speaking of young Americans in the Championship, West Virginia native, Gboly Ariyibi has picked up considerable minutes for Leeds United over the past 2 fixtures. The most recent was against Blackburn on New Year’s Day, in which Blackburn took down Leeds 2-1. Ariyibi entered the match at halftime to play the final 45 minutes for Leeds.

In Gelsenkirchen, this release from Schalke seems to indicate Jermaine Jones may soon be on his way out of the club. It states that he will not travel to Qatar with the club amongst other things. Schalke will be preparing for the second half of their Bundesliga season while in Qatar.

Fabian Johnson is also making headlines as he is reportedly in talks with Borussia Monchengladbach amongst other clubs with his contract due to expire this summer.

Otherwise, the Bundesliga is on holiday for the time being. Bundesliga play will resume Jan. 24, while Bundesliga 2 play will resume Feb. 7.

Roma’s last match was 3 days before Christmas against Catania. The result came as a present to Michael Bradley and Roma as they defeated Catania 4-0. Bradley played 90 minutes for Roma and received a yellow card in his outing. Roma are 5 points off of first place while their next match will be on Sunday against none other than first place Juventus.

The Eredivisie is also taking a break. It will resume competition on the Jan. 17. AZ Alkmaar will be hoping they can refocus themselves over the break after losing four straight matches before the holiday break. Their most recent match was a 5-1 debacle. Aron Johannsson was the lone goal scorer for AZ as he played the entirety of the game.

Two straight losses for Nantes and they find themselves in seventh place in Ligue 1. Saint Etienne defeated Nantes 2-0 just 4 days before Christmas. Alejandro Bedoya played 90 minutes for Nantes.
