Americans Overseas – column on USA soccer players playing abroad for clubs outside of North America

Jozy Altidore and Sunderland suffered a 4-1 loss to Arsenal Saturday. Altidore only played 45 minutes after going down 3-0 in the first half.

Geoff Cameron and Stoke City also went up against a Premier League heavyweight Saturday. Manchester City took down Stoke 1-0 as Geoff Cameron played all 90 minutes.

Tim Howard and Brad Guzan also played 90 minutes this past weekend. Guzan and Aston Villa lost to Newcastle 1-0 while Howard and Everton lost 1-0 to Chelsea.

In the Championship, Oguchi Onyewu returned from injury in a 2-0 win against Huddersfield. Onyewu played 69 minutes.

Reading and Danny Williams lost to Blackburn 1-0 while Williams played 90 minutes.

Will Packwood continued his fine form for Birmingham City by playing another 90 minutes for the side. Packwood played a big part in Birmingham’s 2-1 win over Blackpool.

Tim Ream played another 90 minutes at leftback for Bolton. This time Ream and Bolton faced Watford and won 2-0.

Elsewhere, Duane Holmes played his first match on loan to Yeovil. Last place Yeovil defeated Doncaster 1-0. Holmes played 77 minutes.

For the second game in a row, Fabian Johnson played 90 minutes at rightback for Hoffenheim. Johnson started his career off as a rightback, so it was a return to form. He has seemed more comfortable in that role. After going down 2-0 in the first half to Borussia Monchengladbach, Hoffenheim made a second half comeback and the match ended 2-2.

It’s going from bad to worse for Alejandro Bedoya’s side, Nantes. The side was winless in 5 before losing to Rennes 3-0 this past week. This means the club is now winless in 6 and sits in 14th place. Bedoya played the final 11 minutes off of the bench for Nantes against Rennes.

Aron Johannsson and AZ Alkmaar suffered one of their worst losses of the season Sunday by losing 4-0 to Ajax. He played the entirety of the match.

As for FC Utrecht and Juan Agudelo, it was actually a quite positive week. Utrecht took down Groningen 1-0. Agudelo was not involved in the goal, but he played all 90 minutes and received a yellow card.

Sacha Kljestan seems to have won back a firm place in Anderlecht’s starting XI. Kljestan played 90 minutes again this past weekend against Lokeren. But Lokeren won 2-1 and Kljestan came away with a yellow card.

Terrence Boyd played 90 minutes as well this week. Rapid Wien drew SV Grodig 0-0.

Tijuana didn’t have a great match last Friday, as the Xolos lost to Chiapas 3-0. Edgar Castillo once again played 90 minutes for Tijuana. And, interestingly enough, Joe Corona, Paul Arriola, and Herculez Gomez were the 3 subs for Tijuana. Corona played the final 44 minutes. Arriola played 26 minutes and Gomez played thirteen minutes.

Elsewhere in the Mexican league, DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco both started in Puebla’s 0-0 draw against Atlante. Beasley played 79 minutes while Orozco once again played 90 minutes.

Lastly, Tigres defeated Veracruz 1-0 Saturday. Jose Torres only played the final 17 minutes.
