The Breakdown of Red Bull New York

New York has lost points easily in the last few games, showing it may not exactly be a playoff team

Branded Bulls – column on Red Bull NY (RBNY – NYRB) & the New Jersey area soccer scene.

It’s been a very inconsistent year for the defending Supporters’ Shield champions. It’s been a season where there have been games good enough to win, but sadly bad starts puts Red Bull New York behind or a late goal comes out of nowhere.

After a good performance against the Columbus Crew a week ago, the Red Bulls have been struggling to get consistent wins or performances. After a poor road trip against the Philadelphia Union and San Jose Earthquakes, RBNY has been left with a bad taste in their mouths.

Down in Philadelphia on a mid-week match it was young Matt Miazga who allowed his inexperience to give 2 gifts for the Union. And even though RBNY did make a comeback, another penalty was called against them and they lost the match. But in a game where they needed 3 points badly, it was another late goal they conceded and all they could pocket was one.

But this seems like a broken record that has continued to pop up continuously. Games they should’ve won has become a game that they lost a slight moment of concentration after 85 minutes of clean sheet soccer. Right now all the players are not happy with their performances and they are feeling frustrated.

In the recent game against the San Jose Earthquakes, it was a breakdown within the final 5 minutes of regulation that allowed a Steven Lenhart tally to get through Luis Robles and all game long a win became a draw. Yes they had plenty of chances to convert a second and a third, but when you are facing a side like the Earthquakes, who are scratching and clawing to climb back to the top end of the Western Conference you need to bury some of them to kill the game.

All they can do now is just recoup and gets some rest as they have a friendly with the defending FA Cup Champions in Arsenal and then hit the road to face Real Salt Lake in league play and try to get the full three points to raise their emotions.

NEXT UP: July 26 — Friendly: Red Bull New York vs. Arsenal, Red Bull Arena, Harrison, New Jersey. 5 p.m. EST, ESPN2.
