New York City Football Club has officially signed Chelsea FC and England National Team legend Frank Lampard as its 2nd Designated Player. He joins David Villa, Jeb Brovsky and Josh Saunders as the only players yet to be signed on NYCFC’s roster. He has signed a two-year contract beginning on August 1st, and he will retain his famous number 8 on his New York City FC jersey.

“It is going to be an exhilarating opportunity for us all to create this fantastic new MLS club, in a league that is growing quickly in popularity and ability," Lampard said. "Hopefully my experience can help us have an impact in my first season. I love a challenge and being competitive and I know everyone at New York City FC does too. I am sure we will make the city and our fans proud.”

Lampard certainly has the resume to inspire his New York City FC teammates and its fans.

“Super Frank” is a 2012 Champion’s League winner, 3-Time English Premier League Champion, 2013 Europa League winner, 4-time FA Cup Champion, and 2-time English League Cup Winner.

Individually, Lampard won 2nd Place (Silver) in FIFA’s World Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or voting in 2005, the 2008 UEFA Club Midfielder of the Year, twice Premier League Player of the season, amongst many other honors.

NYCFC’s newest signing has also lead the English Premier League in assists for two separate seasons, was Chelsea FC’s top scorer for four seasons, and also the club’s current all-time top scorer with 211 goals. No midfielder has scored more goals in the history of the English Premier League than Frank Lampard. He has also represented his country in 3 World Cups.

Lampard is also a proven and trusted leader on the pitch, as he is a former Chelsea FC and England Captain, wearing the armband for his country as recently as the scoreless draw vs. Costa Rica in the 2014 World Cup group stages.

“I am really excited about joining New York City FC and helping to play a real part in building something special in one of the sporting capitals of the world,” Lampard added in a statement. “The passion of the nation’s fans at the World Cup was second to none and I am looking forward to meeting New Yorkers and tapping into their love of the game. It is a privilege to be able to help make history here in New York City - I just can’t wait to get started and be part of it.”

Lampard has indeed already met with some New Yorkers, taking photos with members of New York City FC’s only officially-recognized supporter’s club, The Third Rail following his press conference in Brooklyn.

The Co-President of The Third Rail’s division for members under the age of 21 (nicknamed “Cookie Brigade”), Justin Levine, and other members of The Third Rail were able to meet with “Super Frank” and take some photos with him, like this one (Photo by Co-Founder of The Third Rail, Andres Loaiza):

The New York City fans aren’t the only ones happy with the signing. NYCFC Head Coach Jason Kreis is very pleased with the experience, character and all-around ability Lampard will bring to his squad which begins playing in March of 2015:

“I am really looking forward to working with Frank,” Kreis said. “His leadership, maturity and experience are perfect characteristics for a new Club like ours. He is a rare talent, one that scores a lot of goals from midfield, yet is also a disciplined defender and someone who reads the game brilliantly. A gift for a coach.”

Kreis also emphasized the great example a player of Lampard’s work ethic and distinction can inspire in his teammates, especially those that just beginning their career:

“Frank has a tremendous appetite for the game and that will be an enormous help not only to me and the coaching staff but also the rest of the players, particularly the younger ones who can look up to Frank and attempt to emulate his achievements. He has just come from the World Cup and still very much at the top of his game. His desire and work ethic will be infectious.”

NYCFC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna’s first-hand experience playing against Lampard in the Premier League left an indelible impression on him:

“I am delighted Frank has joined us, he was an obvious choice," Reyna said. "I have played against him many times and can vouch for his quality. Frank is one of the best midfielders to have played the modern game, a legend in England and hopefully he will become one here, too.”

The signing of Frank Lampard, an international superstar and legend of modern football, is yet another in a series of signs that New York City FC is not only striving to be one of the biggest clubs in North American Soccer, but eventually one of the elite clubs in the world. Without a doubt, the football world in New York and abroad is beginning to take notice.

Who will be the next star that NYCFC signs for its third designated player spot? Stay tuned.
