Chivas Nation – column on Chivas USA (CUSA) & the Chivas soccer scene.

Chivas USA are on a tail end of a four game losing streak and are sitting in last place in the Western Conference with 23 points.

After buying the team from Jorge Vergara and Angelica Fuentes earlier this year, MLS vowed the team would be re-branded by the start of next season. But MLS Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott admitted last week that it has "been a challenge” trying to sell and re-brand the team.

The league has said there are a few “interested suitors” but nothing concrete as of now.

In addition to that, Abbott stated that Chivas USA would continue playing their home games at Stub Hub Center, who they share with the LA Galaxy, while waiting for their own stadium to be completed.

In other words, they could be at Stub Hub Center for the next few years unless the league or the new owners are willing to move them to a temporary home somewhere else like Downtown Los Angeles.

"We have been looking at USC as a potential site for a stadium. Our focus is on a central LA location. We are not going to publicly negotiate the price but it will be more than was paid by Orlando."

The average attendance this year is 6,637, which is 20% down from last year.

According to Steven Goff, the asking price for the team is at $60 million, down from a reported $75 million the league spent to buy the team.

"We've been spending a lot of time talking to potential buyers. I am very optimistic we can find a wonderful ownership group. I don't have a specific timetable yet but it is an area of high focus for me," said Abbott.

Even if the league can’t find a buyer before the 2015 season, they must act fast to re-brand the team and/or move the team somewhere else so they can have their own identity. Sharing their home with a much larger team like the LA Galaxy won’t help them at all because they will always be compared to them. The team and fans don’t deserve to be the laughing stock of MLS.
