The Valiant Hoops

An awdl gwydd (Celtic/Welsh Ode) for the brave Bhoys of Glascow

The Poetic Game by Michael E. Quigg - combining soccer and poetry

The battle entered with Pride
Ne'er to hide from august foe
Giants expecting conquest,
a contest with little woe

First blow struck, minute eighteen
Bold Barca machine left dazed
Millions roar as word is spread
The head of Samaras praised

The misjudgment of desire
by an empire ill prepared
to face the force in the fight,
the might of intent declared

But sleeping giants do wake
Ne'er for granted take their ease
So in minute fourty-four,
a score born of expertise

Weapons of awakened beast
Rush to feast on wanted prey
But despite unequaled skill,
t'was will nearly winning fray

Under an assault immense
in defense of Forster's wall
In the time beyond the hunt,
the Valiant Hoops did fall

Fourteen lads of hardy heart
Fought from start to cruel end
Glascow's brave Bhoys did not yield
Courage revealed, ne'er to bend
