Toledo Strikes Red Bulls with Poor Call

Red Bulls fall 3-0 to Union amid controversial call by referee Toledo

Branded Bulls – column on Red Bull NY (RBNY – NYRB) & the New Jersey area soccer scene.

It was a fantastic afternoon day in Hoboken, N.J. as I went to the Red Bulls watch party on the Park Pier along the Hudson River.

It was great seeing families and park goers coming over to watch a late Sunday afternoon match with their Red Bulls jerseys on. I also spotted 2 large LED screens – onr showing the FIFA Confederations Cup match in Brazil and the other displaying the New York Red Bulls on the road at the Philadelphia Union.

As I was watching the RBNY game, it was very clear early on that the long 3-week delay from not playing a league match showed how rusty the Red Bulls were. It also seemed that not having Jamison Olave there due to a red card suspension and Tim Cahill arriving late from Australian World Cup duty could put a damper on a brilliant afternoon.

But, sadly, the real reason this match was thrown for a tizzy was the man who would be officiating it, and for the first time in a long time he has finally struck with inept officiating.

That man is Baldomero Toledo and ever since he was assigned as an on-field official in Major League Soccer, all he has done is make every poor decision go against this club from NY, first as the MetroStars then as the New York Red Bulls.

In the 28th minute of the match against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday, the Red Bulls were down a goal the Union, who had possession. Conor Casey headed the ball towards his defender in Danny Cruz, but had to chase it as it was delivered a bit too far.

Cruz made the decision to slide tackle the ball away from an on-coming Lloyd Sam, who was attempting to retrieve it himself. Yet while Sam did stay on his feet and was trying to get the ball, he was in an awkward position and Cruz slid into Sam’s cleats.

Then Toledo came out of nowhere and pulled out the red card and sent Sam to the showers early.

How is a 50-50 challenge a sending off And at the same time the aggressor was Cruz, who slid into the ball and forced Sam to hold up his challenge and got into Sam’s studs, which was more accidental than intent?

If you want to give a booking because studs were showing from Sam, then that is more understandable then throwing out the red card.

Toledo has been unable to truly read the play that is in front of him and makes rash decisions. Just because Sam didn’t argue the card doesn’t mean he wasn’t angry and accepts the decision.

This man has made many rash decisions every single time he has officiated a match when he was at Giants Stadium in the past or when New York is on the road.

When Togo forward Abbe Ibrahim was on the MetroStars in the 2005 season, he was shown a yellow in each half for challenges that weren’t yellow card worthy and was sent off against the New England Revolution on May 21.

Then, against the Houston Dynamo on May 16, 2009, Jorge Rojas got sent off for a questionable foul in the 35th minute.

And while Juan Pablo Angel got booked a minute later trying to get an explanation from Toledo, he informed the media that Toledo is a referee who only cares when he is in the spotlight, but the truth is that he is a careless and shameful referee who doesn’t observe the laws of the game and he has a personal vendetta against the Red Bulls.

While the Red Bulls didn’t show they were ready to resume action in league play, they certainly didn’t need Toledo’s help to lose the match either. This man needs to be sent back to training and re-learn what he has lost, common sense.
