Two second half goals not enough as Crew’s June swoon continues

The Columbus Crew traveled to Kansas City in need of a road result to end a tough June on a positive note. Unfortunately, Kei Kamara and Sporting KC were too much to handle, dealing the Crew a 3-2 defeat in front of another sell-out crowd at Sporting Park.

Kamara’s 3rd goal of the season, a left-footed strike in the 34th minute, gave the home team the early lead. The Crew should have felt fortunate to only be down a goal at halftime, as Sporting KC controlled the run of play throughout the first half.

The first 10 minutes of the second half featured a 3-goal flurry. Crew forward Jairo Arrieta dribbled more than half the length of the field to level things up at 1-1 on his 2nd goal of the 2013 campaign.

KC’s Claudio Bieler quickly followed with his 8th goal of the season, as he took a deflected ball and scorched one into the net past Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum.

The Crew battled right back, as Dominic Oduro capitalized on a poor KC back pass and scored to knot the match up at 2 in the 53rd minute. It was Oduro’s team-leading 8th goal of the season.

Kamara’s 2nd goal of the match – and 4th of the season – proved to be the deciding tally on this night. Kamara beat Gruenebaum at the near post in the 80th minute after Bieler found him with a perfect header pass.

Thus ends a difficult June for the Crew. The Black and Gold finished the month 1-4-1, with its lone win coming against Eastern Conference-leading Montreal Impact. League losses to Philadelphia, Chicago and KC, a U.S. Open Cup loss at Chicago, and a draw against Houston were the rest of the disappointing results.

The Crew (5-7-5, 20 points) now sit in 7th place in the Eastern Conference, 3 points out of the playoffs at the moment. The Crew next travel west to take on the 2-time defending MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy (7-7-3, 24 points) on Thursday.

Sporting KC (7-5-5, 26 points) is in 3rd place in the East, 3 points behind first-place Montreal. KC hosts the Vancouver Whitecaps (7-5-4, 25 points) on Wednesday.
