Americans Overseas – column on USA soccer players playing abroad for clubs outside of North America

Mario Rodriguez has completed a move from Kaiserslautern to Borussia Monchengladbach. The young forward will play on Gladbach’s U-23 side after signing a deal until 2015.

Elsewhere, Jared Jeffrey has left FSV Mainz for a move to MLS. The 23-year-old has signed for DC United via waivers after all MLS clubs declined to participate in a weighted lottery for the midfielder.

With transfer rumors heating up all over the globe, Jozy Altidore is indeed a hot topic and also a hot commodity. Sunderland is one of the many clubs that seem to have strong interest in the AZ Alkmaar forward. An AZ spokesman spoke on Tuesday, saying, “A first bid was insufficient.” It is unclear whether Sunderland will continue to pursue Altidore from here.

Like Jared Jeffrey, other Americans are making moves back to the United States. One of them being Carlos Bocanegra. The former US Men’s National Team captain was on loan with Racing Santander this past season from Scottish club Rangers.

After his loan with Santander ended, Bocanegra had his contract with Rangers mutually terminated. Bocanegra then went on to sign with Chivas USA in MLS through the allocation process after trading with Toronto for the top spot.

Bocanegra’s former MLS club before signing with Fulham in 2004 was Cthe hicago Fire. Like Bocanegra, Clarence Goodson, who had been competing for Brøndby IF in Denmark, is also returning to MLS.

In Goodson’s case, he will be returning to a team that nearly once had him after selecting him in the 2007 MLS Expansion Draft. But Goodson decided to play abroad at that time. That team was and is the San Jose Earthquakes. The terms of Goodson’s deal with San Jose were not disclosed.

Mix Diskerud and Rosenborg drew Viking 0-0 this past Sunday. Diskerud played 60 minutes and received a yellow card in the 43rd minute.

A day earlier, Steve Clark and Honefoss faced off against Sogndal. Clark’s 90 minute display ended in the second 1-1 draw in a row for Honefoss.

Josh Gatt started and played 39 minutes for Molde before an injury led to his removal in the 41st minute. Molde went on to win this match against Sarpsborg 3-1. Unfortunately, the knee injury was severe enough to keep Gatt out of Gold Cup participation with the US Men’s National Team. A timetable for Gatt’s recovery has not yet been set.

Brian Span did not dress for Djurgaarden in their 2-0 win against Osters. This would mark the 5th match in a row where Span has not dressed for the Swedish side.
